Conclusion

God places enormous responsibility on fathers. And yet, the duties are remarkably simple, straightforward, and ordinary. A father who wants his children to grow up to be happy, successful, Christian adults can start with these few things:

Be married to their mother.

Do not divorce her.

Do not abandon your children.

Be involved in your children’s lives.

Take your children to church.

That would seem to be easy enough. And yet it has become counterintuitive to put our children or spouses first, to sacrifice and place their needs before our wants. Without a thought, many fathers are neglecting these duties. As a result, their children’s lives are traumatized, and the very foundations of our culture are being shaken. The path, though, to restoring our children and our culture is clear: be present in your vocation. Obviously there is more to fatherhood than a five-point list. Disciplining and instructing, loving and providing for—these are difficult and personalized tasks. Fathers are called to make sacrifices—not only in money, time, and energy, but in sacrificing their very selves. To put others first, even when they are “only children,” can be exhausting. And yet, fathers do not seem to have to do everything right to be effective in their calling. It is precisely in vocation that God works through us even though we never can be, or do, the “best.” God occupies fatherhood so completely that his presence in earthly fathers may be efficacious in itself to bring his blessings.
